Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer

Don Raymond is the Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer at Alignvest Management Corporation. He is Chair of the Board of Trustees of Queen’s University and past Chair of its Investment Committee. Don is also an Adjunct Professor of Finance and Chair Emeritus of the International Centre for Pension Management, both at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. Don is also a member of the Investments and Risk Advisory Panel of the Monetary Authority of Singapore and serves on the Board of Directors of Great-West Lifeco Inc.

Prior to joining Alignvest in 2014, Don was the Chief Investment Strategist for the $220 billion CPP Investment Board (CPPIB) where he devoted 12½ years of his career to helping build CPPIB into a leading global investment organization. Don built CPPIB’s Public Market Investments department from inception and was also its first Chief Investment Strategist. In this role, he chaired CPPIB’s Investment Planning Committee, responsible for overseeing the portfolio design and management of one of the fastest-growing pools of capital in the world. He was also the principal architect of CPPIB’s innovative Total Portfolio Approach, and was instrumental in the development of the United Nations’ Principles of Responsible Investing (UNPRI), as well as their adoption by CPPIB in 2005.

Prior to joining CPPIB in 2001, Don worked for Goldman Sachs, first in Toronto as a top-ranked fixed-income strategist before moving into a global equity and fixed-income portfolio management role in New York. He began his investment career in the fixed-income derivatives department of Burns Fry, a predecessor of BMO Capital Markets. Prior to developing an interest in finance, Don worked for Schlumberger in China and trained as a pilot in the Canadian military. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Queen’s University and a CFA charter.

Marlene Puffer is a Partner of Alignvest Investment Management. Ms. Puffer has more than 25 years’ experience in investments, pensions and capital markets at world-class financial institutions and in academia. Prior to joining Alignvest, Ms. Puffer was a Chief Strategist at BCA Research, a global leader in independent macro investment strategy, and she was the President and Founder of Twist Financial, an independent firm providing investment strategy and advice for institutional investors, boards, unions, government agencies, and other market participants. Ms. Puffer also serves as Board Trustee and Chair of the Asset-Liability Management Committee at the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP).

Ms. Puffer’s previous experience includes roles as chief investment officer at NAV CANADA Pension Plan, in business development and fixed income portfolio management at PIMCO Canada and Legg Mason Canada, and in debt capital markets at BMO Capital Markets and as head of fixed income analytics at RBC Capital Markets. She began her career as Assistant Professor of finance at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

Ms. Puffer holds a Ph.D. in Finance and Applied Statistics and a M.Sc. in Business Administration from the Simon Business School at the University of Rochester, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Economics from the University of Toronto. She holds a CFA charter and the ICD.D designation granted by the Institute of Corporate Directors.

Kerry Stirton is a Partner of Alignvest Investment Management and a Member of the AIM Investment Commitee. Mr. Stirton has more than 20 years’ investment experience including equity portfolio management, equity research, hedge fund investing, activist investing, and commodity trading. Prior to joining Alignvest, Mr. Stirton was Head of Research at Tetrem Capital, and former Managing Director at CIBC Asset Management, where he led a $25 billion Institutional Advisory Business.

Mr. Stirton’s experience includes the roles of Equity Investor in Goldman Sachs’ Proprietary Investment Group, Senior Research Analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein, and a Manager at McKinsey and Company. Mr. Stirton has also been an Investment Committee Member of the Ben Gurion University Endowment.

Mr. Stirton holds law degrees from Harvard Law School and University of Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and has received an MA from University of Toronto. Mr. Stirton has successfully passed Finra’s Series 7, 63, and 55 Examinations and the NFA’s Series 3 National Commodities Futures Examination.

Randy Cohen is a Partner at Alignvest Investment Management. Mr. Cohen also teaches finance and entrepreneurship in the MBA program at Harvard Business School, as well as Investments at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Mr. Cohen has helped to start and grow a number of investment management firms. He has also served as an actuarial consultant specializing in pension plan asset/liability management. He is a frequent speaker at investment conferences globally, such as the Sovereign Investor Institute and the Foundation and Endowment Asset Management conference.

Mr. Cohen is a highly respected researcher whose main focus is on the relationship between institutional investors and the stock market. He has published frequently cited articles on the ex-ante identification of outstanding investment managers and the prediction of security and asset-class performance. His work has been published in top academic journals including the Journal of Finance, Quarterly Journal of Economics and Journal of Financial Economics. His 2003 paper “The Value Spread” (with Christopher Polk and Tuomo Vuolteenaho) and his 2005 article “Judging Fund Managers by the Company They Keep” (with Joshua Coval and Lubos Pastor), were both nominated for the annual Smith-Breeden Prize for the best asset-pricing paper published in the Journal of Finance.

Mr. Cohen holds an AB in Mathematics from Harvard College and a PhD in Finance from the University of Chicago.

Amy Baryshnik is a Partner of Alignvest Investment Management at which she oversees strategy, business operations, and business development. Previously, Amy was the Chief Operating Officer of Alignvest Capital Management Inc. Before joining Alignvest Management Corporation in 2011, she invested in private debt and private equity at Apollo Investment Management (Nasdaq: AINV) in New York. Amy began her career in the Mergers & Acquisitions and Leveraged Finance departments of UBS Investment Bank in Los Angeles.

Amy earned an MBA with distinction from Harvard Business School and an HBA with distinction from the Richard Ivey School of Business at Western University. Amy serves on the Board of Unity Charity, is an executive officer of the Harvard Business School Club of Toronto, and was awarded the Women in Capital Markets Emerging Leaders Award in 2016.

Dan Chinnick is Vice President, Investment Operations and Trading at Alignvest Investment Management. Mr. Chinnick has more than 16 years of experience in treasury, capital markets and derivatives operations at both buy-side and sell-side institutions. Prior to joining Alignvest, he was Associate VP at TD Bank Group where he led a team responsible for transfer pricing $300 billion of loans, deposits and investments for the U.S. bank. Previously he was Deputy Head of Structured Products, Trading Desk Support at Bank of Montreal and he held senior operations roles in investment finance at the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, and in equity derivatives at TD Securities.

Mr. Chinnick holds a B.A. in Economics from Western University, and has trained at the Queens University Leadership Program at the Queens School of Business and the Product Management Institute at the Schulich School of Business.

Alex Katai is Head of Information Technology at Alignvest Investment Management. Mr. Katai has more than 20 years of experience enabling businesses to gain a competitive advantage through technology. Prior to joining Alignvest, he was Senior Architect for the private cloud initiative at Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP). Prior to joining OTPP he was Head of Technology and Trading Infrastructure at Mapleridge Capital, a quantitative systematic alternative investment manager where he designed, built and ran the systematic trading and research infrastructure. He also held senior technology roles at CIBC Capital Markets and at various software development firms in financial services.

Mr. Katai holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Politehnica University Timișoara, Romania.

Before Russell, he was Regional Sales Manager at Man Investments Canada, where his responsibilities included institutional, retail and national account sales across Canada. Mr. Kouvaras began his career at BluMont Capital, where he was a research analyst with wide-ranging responsibilities.

Mr. Kouvaras is a CAIA Charterholder and a member of the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association.

    Sanjil Shah is the Chief Financial Officer and a Founding Partner of Alignvest Management Corporation. Mr. Shah is also the Chief Financial Officer of Alignvest Capital Management Inc. and Alignvest Investment Management Corporation. Mr. Shah was previously the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer of StorageNow Holdings, a retail real estate business that acquired, developed and operated 11 self-storage stores in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta. The portfolio was successfully built over a four-year period and sold to InStorage REIT for cash consideration of $110 million. During this period, Mr. Shah directly managed approximately 50 retail and management employees. Prior to joining StorageNow, Mr. Shah was a Senior Manager at KPMG LLP, a global professional services firm, where he specialized in providing audit and advisory services to publicly-listed technology companies in Canada and the United States.

    Mr. Shah has also been an instructor at York University’s Schulich School of Business, the University of Toronto and with the Chartered Accountants of Ontario’s School of Accountancy.

    Mr. Shah holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto and is a CPA, CA (Illinois).

    Rupert Adams is a Partner of Alignvest UK LLP, and is in charge of building Alignvest’s presence in Europe. Mr. Adams has strong relationships with several large family businesses in Canada and elsewhere. Prior to joining Alignvest, Mr. Adams was a partner at London-based MAB Partners, a multi-billion dollar independent alternative investment group offering sophisticated investors access to alternative investment funds, with a focus on hedge funds and private equity. He was responsible for building the firm’s business in parts of Europe, Asia, and Canada. Prior to this role, he was the founding partner of Hampton Investment Management and portfolio manager of the Hampton Global Emerging Markets Fund, an equity long/short fund run out of London which he launched in 2007.

    Previously, Mr. Adams spent three years at Matterhorn Investment Management, a London-based Investment Manager that manages three global emerging markets funds, which he helped build from inception in 2002 into a business managing over $500 million.

    Between 1992 and 2003, Mr. Adams spent 11 years with Deutsche Bank and Indosuez Bank as an equity analyst in the Asian banking sector and as an equity research broker.

    Mr. Adams has also been actively involved with a Zurich-based family office, where he has advised a senior member of one of the leading European families on his overall investments and portfolio strategy.

    Mr. Adams holds an MA in Modern History from the University of St. Andrews, holds the UK SII Certificate in Investment Management, and has been an approved person on the UK Financial Services Register since 2002.
