Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer

Don Raymond is the Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer at Alignvest Management Corporation. He is Chair of the Board of Trustees of Queen’s University and past Chair of its Investment Committee. Don is also an Adjunct Professor of Finance and Chair Emeritus of the International Centre for Pension Management, both at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. Don is also a member of the Investments and Risk Advisory Panel of the Monetary Authority of Singapore and serves on the Board of Directors of Great-West Lifeco Inc.

Prior to joining Alignvest in 2014, Don was the Chief Investment Strategist for the $220 billion CPP Investment Board (CPPIB) where he devoted 12½ years of his career to helping build CPPIB into a leading global investment organization. Don built CPPIB’s Public Market Investments department from inception and was also its first Chief Investment Strategist. In this role, he chaired CPPIB’s Investment Planning Committee, responsible for overseeing the portfolio design and management of one of the fastest-growing pools of capital in the world. He was also the principal architect of CPPIB’s innovative Total Portfolio Approach, and was instrumental in the development of the United Nations’ Principles of Responsible Investing (UNPRI), as well as their adoption by CPPIB in 2005.

Prior to joining CPPIB in 2001, Don worked for Goldman Sachs, first in Toronto as a top-ranked fixed-income strategist before moving into a global equity and fixed-income portfolio management role in New York. He began his investment career in the fixed-income derivatives department of Burns Fry, a predecessor of BMO Capital Markets. Prior to developing an interest in finance, Don worked for Schlumberger in China and trained as a pilot in the Canadian military. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Queen’s University and a CFA charter.

Kerry Stirton is a Managing Partner of Alignvest Investment Management and a Member of the AIM Investment Commitee. Mr. Stirton has more than 20 years’ investment experience including equity portfolio management, equity research, hedge fund investing, activist investing, and commodity trading. Prior to joining Alignvest, Mr. Stirton was a Managing Director at CIBC Asset Management, where he led a $25 billion Institutional Advisory Business.

Mr. Stirton’s experience includes the roles of Equity Investor in Goldman Sachs’ Proprietary Investment Group, Senior Research Analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein, and a Manager at McKinsey and Company. Mr. Stirton has also been an Investment Committee Member of the Ben Gurion University Endowment.

Mr. Stirton holds law degrees from Harvard Law School and University of Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and has received an MA from University of Toronto. Mr. Stirton has successfully passed Finra’s Series 7, 63, and 55 Examinations and the NFA’s Series 3 National Commodities Futures Examination.

Randolph B. (Randy) Cohen is the MBA Class of 1975 Senior Lecturer of Entrepreneurial Management at Harvard Business School.  Mr. Cohen is also a Partner at Alignvest Investment Management.

Cohen teaches finance and entrepreneurship at HBS, and has previously held positions as Associate Professor at HBS and Visiting Associate Professor at MIT Sloan.

Cohen’s main research interests are the identification and selection of money managers who are most likely to outperform, and the interface between the actions of institutional investors and price levels in financial markets. Cohen has studied the differential reactions of institutions and individuals to news about firms and the economy, as well as the effect of institutional trading on stock prices. He also has researched the market for municipal securities.

In addition to his academic work, Cohen has helped to start and grow a number of businesses, mostly but not exclusively in the area of investment management, and has served as a consultant to many other companies.

Cohen holds an AB in mathematics from Harvard College and a PhD in finance from the University of Chicago.

Mr. Kouvaras is a Partner at Alignvest Investment Management with a focus on business development. He brings more than 15 years of experience in the investment industry to Alignvest with an emphasis on alternative assets and strategies. Prior to joining Alignvest, he was Regional Director for Russell Investments, where he was responsible for mid-market institutional business development across Canada. Before Russell, he was Regional Sales Manager at Man Investments, where his responsibilities included institutional, retail and national account sales across Canada. Mr. Kouvaras began his career at BluMont Capital, where he was a research analyst.

Mr. Kouvaras holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto and is a CAIA Charterholder and member of the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association.

Rupert Adams is a Partner of Alignvest UK LLP, and is in charge of building Alignvest’s presence in Europe. Mr. Adams has strong relationships with several large family businesses in Canada and elsewhere. Prior to joining Alignvest, Mr. Adams was a partner at London-based MAB Partners, a multi-billion dollar independent alternative investment group offering sophisticated investors access to alternative investment funds, with a focus on hedge funds and private equity. He was responsible for building the firm’s business in parts of Europe, Asia, and Canada. Prior to this role, he was the founding partner of Hampton Investment Management and portfolio manager of the Hampton Global Emerging Markets Fund, an equity long/short fund run out of London which he launched in 2007.

Previously, Mr. Adams spent three years at Matterhorn Investment Management, a London-based Investment Manager that manages three global emerging markets funds, which he helped build from inception in 2002 into a business managing over $500 million.

Between 1992 and 2003, Mr. Adams spent 11 years with Deutsche Bank and Indosuez Bank as an equity analyst in the Asian banking sector and as an equity research broker.

Mr. Adams has also been actively involved with a Zurich-based family office, where he has advised a senior member of one of the leading European families on his overall investments and portfolio strategy.

Mr. Adams holds an MA in Modern History from the University of St. Andrews, holds the UK SII Certificate in Investment Management, and has been an approved person on the UK Financial Services Register since 2002.

Cheryl Davidson is the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Compliance Officer at Alignvest Investment Management Inc.  She is also the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Compliance Officer at Alignvest Capital Management. Prior to joining Alignvest, she was was Chief Financial Officer and Chief Compliance Officer for Mapleridge Capital Corporation, a quantitative systematic alternative investment manager in Toronto. Prior to joining Mapleridge in 2002, Ms. Davidson was a Principal in the financial services industry practice at Ernst & Young, a global professional services firm, where her focus in the latter part of her career was providing audit and advisory services to clients in the alternative asset management, mutual fund and securitization area.

Ms. Davidson is a Chartered Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from York University.

Mr. Vaishwanar was previously Vice President & Chief Risk Officer for 7 years at Topwater Capital, a multi-strategy hedge fund in Connecticut, United States. Prior to that he interned at Gerstein Fisher, a US$3.3bn Registered Investment Advisor in New York City and Merk Investments, the largest FX mutual fund in the Americas based in San Francisco.

He graduated from New York University with an MS in Financial Engineering degree where coursework included Risk Management, Black Swans, Computational and Behavioural Finance. He also has a Bachelors in Computer Engineering from Mumbai University.

Chantelle Wells joined Alignvest Investment Management Corporation in 2018 as an Operations Associate. Ms. Wells is responsible for managing the administration of investments in global externally managed funds. Prior to joining Alignvest Investment Management, Ms. Wells worked for the broader Alignvest Management Corporation team in Operations and Administration.

Ms. Wells graduated with honours from the University of Western Ontario in 2016, and subsequently completed post-graduate studies at the University of Toronto.
